Best Trading Computer Monitors and Backup Systems 2019
Hi everybody. This is Eddie Z from EZ Trading Computers, and you are watching my educational video series on how to buy a trading computer. My goal in this series is to educate you, inform you, and hopefully save you close to a thousand dollars on your next trading system.
There’s no reason you couldn’t have a gorgeous 4-, 6-, 8- or even 12-monitor display where you could trade the markets, browse the internet, watch online news and movies, and open email all with just one keyboard and mouse.
When it comes to monitors, the latest and greatest is something called LED backlit technology. The use of LED backlighting is a dramatic improvement over the previous generation of LCD flat panels.
Some of these improvements include: a much brighter display that is easier on the eyes, an incredible gain in contrast and color range, and 20% to 30% lower power consumption and heat. The panel itself is much thinner, making it much easier to mount. In many models, the thickness is no more than a few inches.
A question I get asked quite often is, how many monitors do I need? Really, this is not an easy question because it really comes down to preference.
For entry level and intermediate level traders, 4 or 6 is usually enough and provides a virtual wall of information. More advanced traders, or just plain screen space junkies like me, can use 8, 12, or even 16 monitors.
Another question I get asked a lot is, what size is the best? For 4- and 6-monitor configurations, I would not go bigger than 24″ in size. Twenty-three, 24 inches work very, very well.
For 8-monitor displays and more, I suggest no more than 21½” monitors, especially if you’re going to be sitting right in front of them at a desk. If you want to get bigger monitors, expect to have at least a 7- or 8-foot desk, and a chair that’s on wheels and that swivels.
Okay, let’s move on to backup systems for traders.
First area I’d like to discuss is surge protectors. Now it might sound silly. We all use search protectors on our TVs and our computers and so forth. But there’s another area you really need to think about.
I happen to live in an area that’s prone to lightning strikes and I’ve personally lost modems and routers to lightning strikes. Why? Because I didn’t have everything covered by the surge protector.
That means any wire that’s coming out of the wall needs to go into a surge protector before it connects to any piece of equipment. That includes network cables, it includes the cable that comes out of the wall that goes into the modem for your cable connection, and anything else that might come out of the wall.
So with lightning strikes comes power outages, and you really need to have a battery backup, pretty obvious, especially if you’re trading.
If you’ve ever been trading and had several positions in the market and had the power go out and you had no idea what was going on, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
Now when you think about your battery backup, you need to have that backup not only on your computer and at least one monitor, preferably two monitors, you need to have it on all your modems and routers.
And if you have several internet connections like I do, it means making sure all that equipment is covered by that battery backup as well.
Now when the power goes out here, I have enough juice for roughly 10 to 15 minutes.
It’s important to make sure you get a powerful battery backup. I have enough power to either put a very, very tight trailing stop on any of my positions, or many times I’ll just get out of the market and wait for the power to be restored.
Along the same lines, something to think about is having backup or redundant internet connections. I use both cable and DSL.
Cable is much faster in my area, so that’s my main source. Secondary, I go to DSL, but if you’ve lost internet access and not been able to see what’s going on with your positions, again, you know what I’m talking about.
And finally when all else fails, it makes sense for that just-in-case situation to have a backup computer. It can be either a laptop or a little bit older computer that you’ve outgrown, but just make sure it has all your software and all your updates ready to go at any time.
