EZ Way To Understand Windows 10 Upgrade

Microsoft Windows update: On July 29, 2015 Windows 10 Operating System will be released to the public.

We’ve been getting calls on our sales and support lines about Windows 10 for a while now. In a previous post, we addressed some of the concerns Traders have about upgrading and weighed-in on when it makes sense for Traders to take the leap to a new operating system. If you haven’t done so yet, please read that article by clicking here.

However, my team and I still getting several calls a day about Windows 10 licenses from traders just like you and we want to continue to try to clear the confusion.

Microsoft put up a FAQ page for Windows users as a resource for all things Windows 10 upgrade related. If you prefer to spend your time perusing the Microsoft website translating FAQ pages into what info you really need to know, go here. HOWEVER, this FAQ doesn’t tell you how this upgrade effects different groups of users. So, I wanted to make it super clear. I hope you find this quick and simple overview useful.

Here is what you need to know:

Group 1: I already own a computer with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1…

Maybe you bought a new computer 6, 9 or 12 months ago. You might be wondering what Windows 10 upgrade is all about and how it effects the license you bought recently. If this describes you, here are the facts:

1. Windows 10 (full version) is available for FREE until July 26, 2016.

This is available as an upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems (OS) for a full year starting July 29th.

2. If your computer is new this year, in the last several years, or has Windows 7 or 8.1 installed, your computer is most likely compatible with Windows 10.

3. You MUST contact the provider of your current desktop software applications and make sure their software is compatible with Windows 10.

Most of your current applications that work on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 should work on Windows 10. HOWEVER, Microsoft is not offering a guarantee it will work. It is especially important to find out about your trading software and applications before you upgrade.

4. You have the option to reserve your upgrade for Windows 10 now.

Here is what this gets you: This will allow you to both check if your device is compatible and get notified when your upgrade is ready (note: Windows 10 will not be released until July 29, 2015. Your upgrade notification would be sent to you on this date or in the following days/weeks.)

5. You can still upgrade anytime from now through July 26 2016 even if you DO NOT reserve the upgrade now.

In order to upgrade, the quickest way is to select the “Get Windows 10” icon in your desktop tool bar.

Group 2: I don’t have a computer with Windows 7 or 8.1…

You might still be on Windows XP (though you shouldn’t be) and have been thinking about upgrading or were thinking of buying a new computer. If this is you, read on.

1. You can still purchase a new Windows 7 or 8.1 operating system license now.

If you want to purchase a computer or upgrade your operating system to Windows 7 or 8.1 now or in the next few months, you still have until July 26, 2016 to upgrade for FREE to Windows 10.

2. You DO NOT have to buy a Windows 10 license in addition to a Windows 7 or 8.1 license.

No additional license fees will be collected to move to Windows 10. ONLY if you don’t to upgrade by July 26,2016.

3. You will most likely have to upgrade your computer IF you are running Windows XP.

Microsoft has said that your hardware is most likely out-of-date if you are still running Windows XP. Odds are that Windows 10 will not be compatible with your computer hardware.

For ALL USERS:

You DO NOT have to pay to keep the license after July 2016.

Once you upgrade during this promotional period (Through July 29, 2016), Windows 10 is yours for the life of the computer at no additional cost. You will be able to receive on going updates for free.

Guide to Windows 10

After reading this you may be interested in our buyers guide. It cuts right to the chase about what technology traders need and what they don’t.

Our Recommendation:

Do NOT be a guinea pig; Do NOT upgrade now! Microsoft does NOT have an especially good track record. Wait as long as possible so that Microsoft can work out the bugs. At this point, you really do NOT have to take any action.
