What if the difference between catching a breakout and missing it completely has nothing to do with your trading strategy?
It might be your computer.
While you're watching charts and waiting for the perfect entry, Windows could be running background services that are quietly stealing CPU power and RAM. When milliseconds matter in trading, those hidden processes can be the difference between executing perfectly and watching the move happen without you.
I'm going to show you how to supercharge your trading computer by disabling six resource-hogging services that are slowing you down right now.
Create a System Restore Point First (Your Safety Net)
Before we disable anything, we need to create a system restore point. Think of this as setting a stop-loss order on a trade. You hope you never need it, but you'll be glad it's there if something goes sideways.
Here's how to do it:
- Click Start and type "Create a restore point"
- Press Enter to open System Properties
- Select your operating system drive (usually C:)
- Click "Create" at the bottom right
- Name it something like "before optimizations" with today's date
- Click "Create" again and let Windows create the snapshot
Now you can optimize with confidence, knowing you have a rollback option if needed.
Accessing the Windows Services Console
To disable these performance-draining services, you need to access the Services console. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type services.msc, and hit Enter. This is your control center for all Windows background services.
The 6 Services Stealing Your Trading Computer Resources
1. Connected User Experiences and Telemetry
This service is Microsoft's data collection system, constantly monitoring how you use your computer and sending information back to Microsoft servers.
While they claim it improves user experience, it's really just consuming CPU cycles and RAM that should be dedicated to your trading platform and chart analysis.
How to disable: Find it in the Services list, right-click, select Properties, change the Startup type to "Disabled," and click OK. You don't need to click Apply first; clicking OK does the same thing.
2. Device Management Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)
Another telemetry-related service that does absolutely nothing for your trading performance. This background process is collecting data you don't need collected and using resources you can't afford to waste when you're executing trades.
How to disable: Right-click, Properties, set to "Disabled," and click OK.
3. Program Compatibility Assistant Service
This one really drives me crazy. The Program Compatibility Assistant constantly scans your programs, looking for compatibility issues. If you keep your trading software updated, which you should, this service is just wasted overhead running in the background.
Your trading platforms don't need Windows second-guessing their compatibility while you're trying to catch a momentum play.
How to disable: Right-click, Properties, set to "Disabled," and click OK.
4. Windows Biometric Service
Unless you're actively using facial recognition or fingerprint login, this service is sitting idle while consuming system resources. Most serious traders using desktop trading computers don't need this running in the background.
How to disable: Find Windows Biometric Service, right-click, Properties, set to "Disabled," and click OK.
5. Windows Error Reporting Service
Every time a program crashes, this service collects crash data and asks if you want to send an error report to Microsoft. Not only is this annoying when you're in the middle of a trade, but it's also using valuable system resources.
Disable it and reclaim those CPU cycles for what matters, your trading performance.
How to disable: Right-click, Properties, set to "Disabled," and click OK.
6. Diagnostic Policy Service
This service provides troubleshooting solutions for Windows components, but in practice, it consumes resources while providing zero value for trading performance. It's deadweight on your system that needs to go.
How to disable: Right-click, Properties, set to "Disabled," and click OK.
Important note: These changes won't take effect until you restart your computer, which we'll do at the end.
Dealing with Third-Party Services (The Secret Weapon)
Beyond Microsoft's built-in services, many third-party programs install background services that run automatically but aren't actually necessary. Here's how to address them:
- Press Windows key + R and type msconfig
- Click on the "Services" tab
- Check the box that says "Hide all Microsoft services." This step is critical. You do not want to accidentally disable essential Windows services that your operating system depends on.
- Review the remaining third-party services and uncheck ones you don't need constantly running
Look for updater services, telemetry collectors, and background processes from software you rarely use.
For example, printer update checkers or cloud storage sync services can be disabled if you don't need them running 24/7. The beauty of this method is that if you disable something and later find you need it, you can simply come back and re-enable it.
Once you've made your selections, click OK and restart your computer immediately to see the performance improvements.
What to Expect After These Optimizations
After implementing these changes and restarting your trading computer, you should notice:
- Faster boot times—your system loads quicker, so you can get to the markets faster
- Quicker platform launches—your trading software opens without delay
- More available RAM—memory that was wasted on telemetry is now available for your charts and data feeds
- More CPU cycles—processing power dedicated to applications that actually make you money
When you're day trading and every millisecond matters, these optimizations can literally be the difference between catching a breakout and missing it.
The real question is: why should Microsoft be collecting data from your personal trading machine in the first place? Your computer should be working for you, not them.
