It's called weights.bin. Google Chrome put it there silently, without asking and without telling you. And if you find it and delete it, Chrome quietly redownloads the whole thing like nothing ever happened.

For everyday users, this is a privacy annoyance. For traders running NinjaTrader, thinkorswim, or TradeStation during a live session, it's something far more serious. It's a hidden AI model competing for the same hardware resources your trading platform depends on.

What Is weights.bin and Why Is It on Your Trading Computer?

The weights.bin file is the engine behind Gemini Nano, Google's on-device AI model built directly into Chrome. The idea behind on-device AI is that it runs locally on your machine instead of sending data to the cloud. Google wanted Chrome to perform AI-powered tricks, things like scam detection and smart suggestions, without constantly phoning home. So they shipped the entire model straight onto your hard drive.

Researcher That Piracy Guy did the forensic work and caught Chrome silently writing this 4 GB model onto devices without user consent. Multiple outlets verified it. It's real, it's widespread, and it almost certainly affects your trading computer right now if you use Google Chrome.

Most coverage of this story stops at the privacy angle. But privacy isn't the issue that should concern traders most. The real question is: what does a hidden 4 GB AI model do to a machine running a live trading platform at 9:31 a.m.?

How Gemini Nano Quietly Drags Down Your Trading Performance

Here's what most people miss about on-device AI: that weights.bin file doesn't just sit politely on your drive. When Chrome decides to fire up Gemini Nano, it loads that 4 GB model into your RAM and starts hammering your CPU. The impact on a day trading setup is direct and measurable.

When that happens, Windows leans on your page file using your hard drive as emergency RAM. Even on a fast NVMe drive, that's orders of magnitude slower than real memory. The result.

Thinkorswim slows down, not because its own memory got touched, but because the whole system got squeezed. Scanners that refresh every second start lagging. Charts take an extra moment to populate. And that moment during a gap and go or an FOMC print is exactly when you need to be fast.

How to Find Out If Gemini Nano Is on Your Machine

Open Chrome and type chrome://components in the address bar, then hit Enter. Scroll down and look for Optimization Guide On Device Model. If it shows a version number and a file size, Gemini Nano is living rent-free on your trading computer right now.

How to Remove Gemini Nano From Your Trading Computer for Good

Google did add a toggle to disable this, and it's the cleanest method available.

  1. Open Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  2. Go to Settings, then click System on the left sidebar.
  3. Find the toggle labeled On-device AI and turn it off.

Chrome will disable the model, remove it, and stop redownloading it. A quick note: this turns off Chrome's on-device scam detection. Your standard Safe Browsing protection, the layer that flags known phishing and malware sites, keeps running. You're only disabling the new AI layer. On a dedicated trading computer that only connects to your broker and trading platforms, that trade-off is a no-brainer.

If You Don't See the Toggle: The Flags Method

If the toggle isn't visible in your version of Chrome, use this approach instead:

  1. Type chrome://flags in the address bar and hit Enter.
  2. Search for optimization-guide-on-device-model and set the flag to Disabled.
  3. Search for prompt API for Gemini Nano — disable both entries that appear.
  4. Click the blue Relaunch button in the bottom right corner.

Manually Delete the File to Confirm It's Gone

If you used the flags method or simply want to verify the model has been removed, you can delete it by hand. Press the Start button, type Run, and open it. In the Run box, paste this path: %localappdata% and navigate to the OptGuide On Device Model folder. Inside, you'll find a version-numbered subfolder containing your weights.bin file. Delete the entire OptGuide On Device Model folder. Because you disabled the feature first, Chrome won't download it again. Finally, make a note to check back after major Chrome updates. Google has a habit of quietly re-enabling features when new versions roll out. Add it to your quarterly trading hardware maintenance checklist.

The Bigger Picture: Your Browser Is No Longer Just a Browser

This isn't an isolated incident.
