Is your trading computer freezing at the worst possible moments? Maybe your charts lag, your orders aren't getting filled, or your entire system locks up right when you're about to place a crucial trade?
I get it. This is so frustrating, but here's the deal. If your computer keeps freezing, there's a high probability that it's your hard drive causing the problem.
So in this video, I'm going to break down why your hard drive matters, why old-school drives are killing your performance, and why you need something called an NVMe SSD in your trading computer.
Why Your Hard Drive Matters
Let's start with the basics. A computer's hard drive is the system's main storage device. It's where Windows, your trading software, and all your files- your trading workspaces, your documents, your charts, your applications are stored when your computer is off. Now, when you turn the computer on, it loads all of the necessary instructions from the hard drive into the RAM, the random access memory, so your system can use them in real-time.
Now, here's what you need to know. The hard drive stores everything permanently until you delete it. RAM only holds data temporarily while your computer is on. Once you shut down, it clears out. The hard drive speed directly impacts how fast your system boots up, how fast it loads your trading software, and here's the issue. If your hard drive is slow, your entire trading system is going to lag, it's going to freeze, and it's even going to crash during those crucial moments. It's going to make you insane.
Old-School Drives Are Performance Killers
Until recently, most computers came with the old-school mechanical hard drives, the HDDs. These are the ones with the spinning disks and a moving read-write head. And guess what? These old drives are terrible for traders because they're painfully slow, the loading times drag, and your system gets bottlenecked.
Also, they wear out over time because they have moving parts. They eventually fail, and they're fragile. If you bump or drop a laptop with a standard HDD, you could lose all your data instantly. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you? Oh, it's a nightmare. Losing workspaces, your indicators, or worse, missing a trade because your system locked up.
NVMe SSD Is What You Need
So if your trading computer still has an old-school spinning hard drive, it's time to upgrade now. This is where something called solid-state hard drives, SSDs, come in. SSDs use flash memory like on your cell phone, instead of a spinning disk, and this means no moving parts, way more durable and reliable, drastically faster speeds, almost instantaneous loading, and better performance for trading.
No more freezing, no more lagging when executing trades. But here's the kicker. Not all SSDs are created equal. The latest and fastest type is called an NVMe SSD. NVMe, Non-Volatile Memory Express, and it's an absolute game changer for traders. NVMe SSDs are up to 200 times faster than those old mechanical drives.
Your system will boot in seconds. Your trading software like Thinkorswim, NinjaTrader, or TradeStation will load nearly instantly. If you want seamless, spot-on execution, ultra-fast charting, and zero lag, you need an NVMe SSD in your trading computer.
One quick word of warning: not all SSDs are created equal. Some computer vendors will advertise that their systems come with SSD storage. But what they don't tell you is that it's an older SSD, which is way slower and cheaper than an NVMe. So always make sure your trading computer has an NVMe SSD. If it's just an SSD without specifying NVMe, you could be getting an outdated drive, and that won't give you the speed boost you need.
Still Having Freezing Issues?
If you've already upgraded to an NVMe SSD and your trading computer is still freezing, here are some final things you can check.
Check your RAM. If you're running multiple monitors and multiple trading platforms, you need at least 32 gigabytes of RAM. 16 won't do it.
Next, upgrade your drivers and update Windows. Outdated software can cause lags and crashes.
And third, optimize your network. Slow internet can look like a computer issue. And use a wired Ethernet connection for better stability.
