Last week I got a call from a trader in Phoenix who was ready to ship back a $3,000 trading computer. He was furious. TradingView was freezing every single morning the second the market opened, and his side monitors were showing dead charts while the opening bell was ringing. He was convinced he had a lemon. He didn't. And there's a good chance you don't either.
I asked him one question: Which monitors are freezing — the one you're looking at, or the ones off to the side? He paused and said, the side ones. Right there, I knew exactly what was happening. His computer was fine. His browser was the problem, and it was doing precisely what it was designed to do.
Why TradingView Freezes on Your Side Monitors
Here's the thing about TradingView that almost nobody talks about: it's not a traditional desktop program. It runs inside your web browser — Chrome, Edge, whatever you have open. And that one fact changes everything about why it lags, why it freezes, and how you actually fix it.
Modern browsers like Chrome and Edge have quietly been turned into babysitters. Developers at Google decided browsers were consuming too much memory and draining too much battery, so they built in two features specifically designed to put your tabs to sleep. They're called Memory Saver and Energy Saver. The catch? They only target the tabs you're not actively clicking on — the background ones sitting quietly off to the side.
To your browser, your charts on monitor two and monitor three aren't your trading setup. They're idle background tabs. So the browser does it a favor, freezes them, stops them from updating, and puts them in timeout. You sit there at 9:31 AM watching a dead chart, screaming at a computer that's working perfectly.
Whether you're running TradingView, thinkorswim Web, or NinjaTrader's browser version, the story is the same. It's rarely the hardware. It's almost always a settings problem.
3 Fixes, Easiest to Best
So let me give you three fixes in order — easiest to best.
Fix 1: Turn Off the Browser Babysitter
This one fix alone will solve the problem for roughly half the traders who contact me about freezing charts. Here's how to do it in Chrome:
- Click the three dots in the upper-right corner and select Settings.
- Navigate to Performance.
- Find Memory Saver and switch it off.
- Scroll down to the part where you can add sites that should always stay active. Add tradingview.com.
Now you've told the browser, hands off, this one's working, don't touch it. That alone will fix it for half the people who call me. It's free. Took 30 seconds. No new computer.
Fix 2: Turn On Hardware Acceleration
This one is the opposite; you want it switched on. Here's how:
- Go to Chrome Settings, then System.
- Find Use graphics acceleration when available and enable it.
- Restart the browser.
What this does is hand the chart drawing job to your graphics card instead of making your processor do it. TradingView's charts use WebGL rendering. Every candle, every line, every drawing, every Pine Script indicator you're running - that GPU eats that for breakfast. Your CPU chokes on it.
Full honesty: on some Windows 11 machines, certain graphics drivers fight with this setting, and it can make things worse. So here's your test. Turn it on. Trade for 15 minutes. Watch your charts. If it's smoother, you won. If it got choppier, just flip it back off. It took 15 minutes, and now you know.
Fix 3: Ditch the Browser Entirely — Get the TradingView Desktop App
This is the fix that ends the problem for good. Stop using the browser entirely. Download the TradingView desktop app. It's free. Every plan has it. They removed the Windows limit years ago. It's built on the Electron framework, so Chrome's babysitter features have nothing to grab onto. There's no background tab to freeze because each chart becomes its own real window with its own process isolation on its own monitor, managed by Windows itself, not some browser deciding it knows better than you do.
With the TradingView desktop app, multi-monitor trading becomes much smoother. You can link your windows by color, so changing the symbol on one chart updates the others automatically. Crosshair sync keeps your cursor movement connected across every screen, making it easier to track price action across your entire setup.
When It Actually Is a Hardware Problem
Nine times out of ten, the freeze isn't a hardware problem. It's a settings problem. And I'd rather tell you the truth and lose a sale than sell you a multi-thousand-dollar machine that you don't need. But for that one time out of ten where the machine really is the bottleneck, let's be precise about what actually matters.
The freeze itself is usually a RAM problem. Browsers spin up a separate process for every chart and every tab, and they all want memory. Run TradingView across four monitors plus NinjaTrader or another broker platform plus a couple Chrome windows and 16 gigs gets eaten alive before the opening bell. That's your freeze. Heavy Pine Script indicators will push it even higher.
RAM is a spec everybody under-buys. 32 GB minimum. And if you're running a multi-platform setup, 64 is where I'd put you.
But don't you dare cheap out on a processor. The morning the market rips and every platform you own is recalculating at the same second, a weak CPU is the thing that falls a half a step behind. And a half a step is the whole game. You want real cores and real clock speed. A current flagship-class chip.
So in conclusion, there are three fixes. Turn off your browser babysitter, turn on hardware acceleration and test it, and get off the browser and onto the desktop app. Do those three things and that freeze is gone. And most of you won't have spent a penny. Your computer was never the lemon. Your browser was just doing its job a little too well.
